Introduction to Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek
Kanchenjunga Trek, Literally Kanchenjunga means, crystal clear in Nepali. Geographically the Kanchenjunga mountain is the second tallest in Nepal and the third tallest in the world after the K2 in Pakistan. The whole trekking area in this region streaked through and around the Arun River is untouched. The Arun valley is one of the most beautiful regions for trekking in Nepal. Traveling around this part gives you the opportunity to enjoy and study deeply the traditional culture of Rai and Limbu, the native locals of this area. Trekking in this area is an adventure that is full of extraordinary excitement and above all, an unforgettable experience of you lifetime. This area is declared as the gift of the Earth full of alpine grass lands, rocky outcrops, dense temperate and sub-tropical forests and low river valley. It is situated north in north eastern part of Nepal border by Tibet, China and India. This enchanting area offers the excellent display of flowering glory of rhododendrons, orchids, lilies, primula and many other flowers. The must-see place of this region is Kanchenjunga Conservation Area spread in an area of 2,035 square Kilometers. The area has a rich diversity of wildlife including snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer red panda and others. Impheyan, pheasant, red-billed blue mangpie, shy drongo are the major birds found here. Kanchenjunga area is the inhabitant of Sherpas who have different culture and tradition from those of Solukhumbu district. Rais, Chhetris, Brahmans are other ethnic group of this region. Monasteries, chhortens, temples, prayer walls are the representation of this area. So Kanchenjunga is the most popular trekking destination which will fire up the imagination of everyone. Mount Kanchenjunga, one of the world's most spectacular mountains, is renowned as the queen of mountains. Kangchenjunga, the third highest peak on the planet, can boast of varied ecological zones, from the subtropical land to glacial wilderness. Mighty Kangchenjunga glacier is the most famous attraction of Kanchenjunga. Great valleys, encircled by high peaks, are another feature of Kanchenjunga.

- Itinerary in detail
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu Airport and meet with our airport staff at the airport. Then transfer to Hotel by private car. Welcome drinks and short briefing about your trek, relax.
Day 2: Flight Kathmandu to Badrapur — Drive to Ilam
We will take a morning flight (45 min) to Bhadrapur and then continue our journey with a long drive to Ilam 3-4 hours, Nepal ’s largest tea plantation area and stay overnight at Hotel.
Day 3: Drive from Ilam to Taplejung (6 - 7 hours). On the way we pass through Phidim, Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 4: Trek from Taplejung — Mitlung (921 m) 5-6 hours
The next couple of days see us trekking through Nepal’s lush, green and diverse mid hills, following shimmering rivers and contouring around precipitous ridge lines. The villages we pass through are Hindu and Buddhist with traditional mud-brick houses and are dotted with rice paddies, terraced fields, fruit trees and cardamom farms. Today we walk down to the Tamur river and then follow it upstream, stopping for lunch at Handewa. We will be following the Great Himalaya Trail Cultural Route, a spectacular and interesting route through some of Nepal's most remote villages. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 5: Trek from Mitlung — Chiruwa (1270 m) 5-6 hours
Today is quite challenging as we follow rough paths high above the river. The trail passes through the Limbu and Tamang villages of Sinwa, Tawa and Porke, and as the valley narrows, passes over old landslide debris and boulder-strewn river deposits. We will finally descend to the Thiwa Khola, crossing it on a wooden bridge, before the final leg of up and down before arriving at the small market town of Chirwa. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 6: Trek from Chiruwa — Sukethum (1579 m) 5 hours
Today we pass through Limbu, Rai, Tamang and Sherpa villages. The trail follows the Tamur River and climbs a spur before descending to the Simbua Khola, which originates from the Yalung Glacier on the south of Kanchenjunga. After another ridge we join the steep and narrow Ghunsa Khola Valley and then where the confluence of the Tamur River and Ghunsa Khola meet it is only a 15 minute walk to our campsite on the banks of the river at Sukethum. Day 7: Trek from Sukethum — Amjlosa (2308 m) 6 hours
From Sukethum we trek northeast along the Ghunsa Khola gaining altitude as we head towards Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. Today’s walking is on exposed terrain with steep uphill after our lunch stop at Jaubari, bringing us to the Tibetan village of Amjilossa where we will camp for the night. Day 8: Trek from Amjilosa — Gyabla (2730 m) 5-6 hours
Today we will walk through rhododendron and bamboo forests. After lunch we will start our ascent to our final destination of the day, Gyabla. Nearing our destination, we need to keep an eye out for a big waterfall on the opposite side of the river as this signals our imminent arrival at our campsite, one of the most beautiful camp sites of the trek, with amazing views. Day 9: Trek from Gyabla — Ghunsa (3595 m) 5-6 hours
Today we head for not only the largest but the last village in valley, Ghunsa. Ghunsa is a picturesque Tibetan village with wooden houses, a micro hydropower plant, school and a health post. There are also several lodges and shops in the village and a small Kanchenjunga Conservation Area office, plus a couple of gompas. Ghunsa is the junction for all the trekkers coming and going to KBC and the Salele Pass. From Gyabla, the trail crosses a broad meadow past a village and climbs a gentle hill before descending to cross the river into the village of Ghunsa. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 10: Trek from Ghunsa rest/acclimatization day
Today we do a morning acclimatization hike to other side of the river with a gain of about 400 m, taking about 3.5 hours for the round trip. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing and exploring the lively Tibetan village of Ghunsa. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 11: Trek from Ghunsa - Khangpachen (4050 m) 7 hours
From Ghunsa the trail makes a gradual ascent through beautiful pine and rhodendron forests along the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola, passing several mani walls and chortens along the way. We will have to cross several scree slopes and some glacial moraine before we drop down to Khambachen, our home for the night. Khambachen is a Tibetan settlement with about a dozen houses nestled in a grassy plain surrounded by moutains and a very impressive view of the huge north face of Jannu. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 12: Trek from Khangpachen - Lhonak (4780 m) 7 hours
Reaching the source of the Ghunsa Khola, we'll stay on the left (north) side of the Kanchenjunga Glacier, hiking along a high plateau past the intersecting Lhonak Glacier to our left to reach the high, flat campsite at Lhonak. Although a cold campsite, due to its high elevation, the views are fantastic as we will be surrounded by some of the highest snow-peaks on the planet - Wedge Peak (6,750 m), Mera Peak (6,344 m), Nepal Peak (6,910 m), Twins (7,351 m) among others. Day 13: Trek from Lhonak - Kanchenjung Base Camp (5143 m) 3 Hours
After leaving Lhonak we head directly east following the same glacier on the northern ridges to a fantastic campsite at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, also called Pang Pema. Camping here is one of the highlights of the trek and makes us realise just how small and insignificant we are in this world of snow and rock. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 14: Trek from KBC — Ghunsa (3595 m) 8 hours
Today is a long day as we retrace our footsteps back to Ghunsa, where we stay for the night. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 15: Trek from Ghunsa to High Camp (approx. 4,100 m) 4 -5 Hours
From Ghunsa we follow a steep rocky trail through forests that finally emerges at High Camp below the Sele La Pass where we camp for the night. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 16: Trek from High Camp - Tseram (3870 m) - 8 hours
Today is a bit of an epic, taking us over passes on our way to Tseram, the highest being Sele La (4,480 m) and Sinion La (4,660 m). After completing the final pass of the day, we descend a 1,000 m to Tseram, where we will camp for the night. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 17: Trek from Tseram — Ramche (4580 m) 7 - 8 hours
Today we walk up to Ramche, where we pass the snout of the Yalung glacier into an ablation valley. All the peaks to the east straddle the India-Nepal border- Koktang (6,147 m), Rathong (6,679 m) and some of the Kabrus which are all over 7,000 m. There is a lake and a meadow along with two stone houses at Ramche and often blue sheep can often be seen on the grassy slopes above. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 18: Explore to Yalung Base Camp (4500 m) 7 — 8 hours
Trekkers have to walk through moraines and strenuous rocky path. Trekking this day is pretty adventurous, as you have to walk along the glaciers. Today you cross the Oktang glacier, where the panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and Mount Jannu along with other different peaks captivate your emotions completely. Some parts of the area touch the neighboring India. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 19: Trek from Ramche - Anda Phedi (3390 m) 5 hours
This day you retrace back to Anda Phadi. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 20: Trek from Anda Phedi — Tortong (2995 m) 5 hours
We are starting to descend from today. We steadily descend through a forest of rhododendrons to Tortong. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 21: Trek from Tortong — Yamphudim (2080 m) 5 — 6 hours
The trail drops steeply to the Imja Khola then crosses the Dubi Pass and descend into Yamphudin. The village has a mixed community of Sherpas, Rais, Limbus and Gurungs and is also home to a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area office. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 22: Trek from Yamphudim — Khebang (1915 m) 5 -6 hours
We descend from Yamphudin to the Khebang for our camp. Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 23: Trek from Kheband to Khanidingbe and Overnight in Home-Stay/Lodge.
Day 24: Drive Khanidingbe to Birtamod by jeep
This will be a long day of driving to Birtamod. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 25: Morning drive to Bhadrapur airport and flight back to Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel.
Day 26: Final departure to international airport as per your flight schedule.
